When we read we naturally tend to subvocalise (we hear the characters voice in our heads). One of the downsides of Spritzing is a lack of emotion in the words due to the speed. Are they savoring every word? Probably not.” They just rip through a book, reading for plot. We’re also more likely to re-read paragraphs so Spritz wouldn’t really be suitable.ĬEO of Spritz, Frank Walden says “If you’re reading Shakespeare, you’re not going to want to do it with Spritz, but with a romance novel, for example, people skim like crazy anyway. Our pace of reading is naturally slower when we’re learning, digesting and questioning, making sense of and understanding anything new. However, non-fiction books are less suited. The appeal of Spritzing for many will be in reading easy to digest fiction books. How many times have you had to read and re-read a paragraph of text because you were distracted or you simply needed further understanding? Do you ever pause when reading a book to reflect on what you’ve just read? Does you’re reading slow down and speed up in reaction to the content? All of these things show the limits of Spritzing. ![]() Without this movement, you can achieve hugely increased WPM (word per minute) reading times.Ĩ0% of your reading time is actually spent moving your eyes.Īlthough this sounds incredible and I’m sure you’re already thinking about how many books and emails you could now get through in a day, what is questionable is the ability of the brain to process and store this information as deeply. 80% of your reading time is actually spent moving your eyes from one word to the next. This is where Spritz makes a huge difference to the speed at which you read. With Spritz, your eyes focus in one position, as opposed to having to move to read the rest next words. If you feel like you can go faster, try adjusting the wpm. Focus on the red letter and try to relax, using your peripheral vision to read each word. It’s basically the point within the word that you’re most likely to recognise and therefore read the word optimally. ![]() One letter in each word is coloured red and this is representative of the ORP (Optimal Recognition Point). Spritz uses a very small interface to present just one word at a time. Each book is in itself unique, it has character. However, this all changed when I jumped onboard the Kindle revolution. I can now carry hundreds of books with me in my handbag and that’s pretty amazing! However, there’s a new player about to come onto the market called Spritz that will radically change how we all read and could see an end to current eReaders.” What is Spritz? To me, part of the ‘user experience’ is looking through a book case of pretty, colourful covers, picking each one up in turn and leafing through the sheets, breathing in the smell of the paper. ![]() You can normally find me hanging out in the psychology section at Waterstones. For a long time, I just couldn’t see myself ever replacing phsyical books with digital versions. “I’m an avid reader, in fact my nickname is ‘the bookinator’. A psychologists thoughts on Spritz and the future of digital reading How do you read these days? Do you read physical or digital books? Have you heard of Spritzing? Here, Lisa Duddington, Digital Psychologist at Keep It Usable, looks at how reading has changed and what the digital future holds. ![]() Peter Thiel’s legal campaign has targeted individual writers like Sam Biddle, editors such as John Cook, and me as publisher. "You may have seen the news that I have, as expected, had to join the company in bankruptcy. On Monday afternoon, Denton sent the following memo, with the subject line "Before the dawn," to Gawker employees: Charles Harder, the lawyer who represented Hogan and is reportedly being paid by Thiel, is also representing many of the other plaintiffs who are suing Gawker, Denton and other current and former employees of the company. ![]() The Hogan case is just one of many similar suits currently pending against Gawker and Denton. Ziff Davis, a publicly-traded company that owns, has made an initial bid of $90 million. The company's assets will be sold at a bankruptcy auction later this month. Denton told POLITICO that Gawker Media's was up 8 percent in the first half of 2016, compared to the first half of 2015. Traffic to Gawker Media sites has actually increased since the bankruptcy filing - from about 92 million global monthly unique visitors in April to about 104 million monthly global unique visitors in July, according to Quantcast. Since then, the company has continued to operate more or less normally. Gawker Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. Over the past few months, Gawker, Denton and Daulerio asked three different courts - the Florida trial court, a Florida appeals court and a federal bankruptcy court in New York - to "stay" the judgment until the appeals court decided whether to uphold the judgment.īut these legal maneuvers were unsuccessful, which meant that Hogan was free to immediately move to collect on the judgment. Until that ruling, Hogan is free to seize their assets to enforce the judgment. Gawker, Denton and Daulerio are appealing the judgment, but the appeals court likely will not rule on whether to uphold or throw out the judgment until next year. In March 2015, a Florida jury decided in favor of Hogan, awarding him $140.1 million - $15 million against Gawker, $10 million against Denton personally, $100,000 against Daulerio personally, and $115 million against all three defendants jointly. Peter Thiel, a billionaire technology venture capitalist who dislikes Gawker, secretly funded Hogan's lawsuit against the company. Hogan sued Denton, Gawker and Daulerio in 2012, after the news site published a short excerpt of one of Hogan's sex tapes. "On this bitter day for me, I am consoled by the fact that my colleagues will soon be freed from this tech billionaire’s vendetta." "Gawker Media Group’s resilient brands and people will thrive under new ownership, when the sale closes in the next few weeks," he wrote. Denton alluded to the imminent bankruptcy filing in two tweets on Monday morning. Although there are a variety of grid styles available, we’ll explore five of the most popular. One of the major factors that will determine the style of your window grid is the architecture of your home. ![]() There are a variety of off-the-shelf types available as well as custom-made options. The style of the grid refers to the aesthetics of the design and how it divides the glass pane. Window grids have no functional purpose, nor do they add structural integrity to your windows. The purpose of window grids is to add curb appeal and design elements to your home. In this post, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about window grids so you can decide if they make sense for your new windows. There are a variety of styles and types of grids. How do I paint wall panelling?ĭepending on the style of panelling, it is usually best to paint it all in one colour, especially if you have used MDF pieces, to make the whole wall look like one piece of panelling.Window grids, also known as window grills or muntins, are partitions used to visually divide a window into smaller sections for aesthetic reasons. Installing skirting over the top of panelling will do the same at floor level. ![]() Most panelling specialists supply matching dado rails, which can be used to hide a multitude of levelling sins, leaving a crisp connection between panelling and wall. How do I make DIY wall panelling look professional? Don't forget to include access panels to any isolation valves or cisterns for plumbing maintenance. do work with existing architectural features - running panelling up to a picture rail is very effective - and think about the height of windows and sanitary ware. Dividing the wall in half can make the ceilings fell lower. The top of the panelling should sit either a third or two-thirds of the way up the wall. (Image credit: Future PLC/Brent Darby) What height should wall panelling be? Things can get complicated if there are tricky alcoves and windows to work around, so it may be worth hiring a local carpenter or handyman to ensure smart results – use Rated People (opens in new tab) to find local trades. These tend to be MDF-based (solid timber requires professional skills/ tools) and can be simply glued onto the walls using a 'No Nails' type adhesive. It depends on ability but there are plenty of panelling kits designed specifically for DIYers. Proficiently painted with an eggshell finish, it will cope admirably with splashes, but not total immersion, so don't use it in the shower. In high-moisture environments, like bathrooms, it's essential to use Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF. Wood is the traditional material used for wall panels but if you're going for a more modern painted finish, MDF is much better value and is actually a very stable board. Does wall panelling have to be made from MDF? In the bathroom it makes a warmer alternative to tiles. As long as the plaster isn't blown, and you've dealt with any damp, panelling can be popped right over existing walls for an instant neat finish. ![]() What are the benefits of panelling?īesides looking fabulous, panelling is a quick-fix solution for older walls in less-than-perfect condition. If you're worried about a small space feeling smaller, opt to use a light colour such as grey or white to help reflect the light. That said, if you're adding vertical planks of wood to a wall, it could help the space seem larger as they'll draw your eye upwards towards the ceiling. ![]() It's not a hard and fast rule no, but it can be used to make a room feel cosier and more intimate. Does wall panelling make a room look smaller? A quick sand and a lick of paint will transform it in minutes. Or even have a trawl of secondhand sites such as Gumtree, Ebay or Freecycle to see what boards, or woods people are throwing out. And then even the materials can be as cheap as chips! A simple pallet board can be taken apart and its panels used on the wall. It doesn't have to be, no! If you're doing it yourself, firstly that means you'll be saving the cost of labour, which in most cases is the highest pay-out you'll have to make. Wall panelling – everything you need to know Is wall panelling expensive? The dado-height wood panelling (seen reflected in the stylish round mirror) is echoed by the bath panel which helps to unify and define all surfaces, the panelling is even channelled on the cupboard doors for further effect. Looking for a stylish bath panel idea? Consider this smart way of seamlessly incorporating the bath into the surrounding wood panelling. ![]() Shortly after the game's release, one of Poland's most popular TV stations, TVN aired a report on the game, accusing the distributor, CD Projekt of selling satanic games in commonly accessible kiosks. In Poland, it was one of the first of the series of cheap premiere releases in the ExtraGra magazine. Eric Bratcher of NextGen called it "A compelling ' Illbleed meets Space Channel 5 ' diversion, but the unique presentation can't cover the weaknesses in AI and puzzle design." However, the reviewer cited "poor polygonal figures and texturing", and some environmental bugs as the low points of the game. PC Gamer US praised the animations, camera angles, the use of a dual character, and the game's low learning curve. Overall, the game was described as competent but lacking polish. But other times, the combat is poor." The environments of the game were praised for their realism and atmosphere, while character models and sound effects were rated as plain. In regards to the game's action sequences, Kasavin opined that "some of the battles are scripted very well. GameSpot 's Greg Kasavin cited difficulties with the control scheme. The game received "generally favorable reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Its theme is similar to The Running Man, written by Stephen King, whose name is mentioned early in the game. The game's script was written by Hubert Chardot, better known for his work in the Alone in the Dark series. The game uses a checkpoint save system represented by television sets found in-game. Deva also has the ability to fly and regenerate health when standing in fire. ![]() Some enemies generate souls when killed, and Deva can inhale souls to replenish her mana. Spells do not require ammunition, but do deplete mana that regenerates slowly. As Deva, the player uses spells to attack enemies. As Dave, the player has access to a variety of guns, which are equipped with laser sights to assist the player in aiming. The pacing, exploration, and puzzle factor of the game is similar to that of other survival horror titles. Occasionally, a news helicopter will also be present and scripted cutscenes will be viewed from an aerial perspective. During gameplay, Dave/Deva is followed by a small flying camera as well as a cameraman, and the player can switch between the two camera views as desired. The player can transform between Dave and Deva by activating pentagrams located at certain places throughout the game's levels. The Devil Inside is presented as a reality television game show documenting the supernatural exploits of the protagonist Dave and his titular alter ego, a succubus named Deva. Dave takes aim at a shotgun-wielding Electrocuted Criminal For example, a portrait photographer often adjusts the lens of the camera so that the subject’s face is in focus, leaving what’s behind purposefully blurry. With that information, you can generate not just one but every possible image of whatever is within the camera’s field of view at that moment. Instead of merely recording the sum of all the light rays falling on each photosite, a light-field camera aims to measure the intensity and direction of every incoming ray. Light-field photography is far more ambitious. So the best a typical camera can provide is the familiar two-dimensional photograph, which has a fixed point of view and a focus determined entirely by how the lens was set when the photo was snapped. The sensor records the total intensity of the light rays landing on each point, or photosite, but in the process loses directional information about where the different rays came from. In a conventional digital camera, the light rays hitting each point on the image sensor combine. Nowadays, scientists and engineers prefer to think in terms of light rays rather than Leonardo’s more poetic “radiant pyramids.” But light-field photography is based precisely on his idea that the light arriving at any point-what he called the “smallest part” of the air-carries all the information necessary to reproduce any view that can be had from that position.ĭoesn’t an ordinary camera do that? Not at all. These pyramids intersect and interweave without interfering with each other.…The semblance of a body is carried by them as a whole into all parts of the air, and each smallest part receives into itself the image that has been caused.” In his manuscripts on painting, Leonardo wrote, “The air is full of an infinite number of radiant pyramids caused by the objects located in it. Perhaps most important, these cameras require a fundamental shift in the way people think about the creative act of taking a photo. ![]() ![]() The next generation of light-field optical wizardry promises ultra-accurate facial-recognition systems, personalized 3-D televisions, and cameras that provide views of the world that are indistinguishable from what you’d see out a window.īut light-field cameras also demand serious computing power, challenge existing assumptions about resolution and image quality, and are forcing manufacturers to rethink standards and usability. A single light-field snapshot can provide photos where focus, exposure, and even depth of field are adjustable after the picture is taken. Light-field technology heralds one of the biggest changes to imaging since 1826, when Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photograph of a scene from nature. A software update to the camera, coming soon, will even let you produce 3-D images. Lytro promises no more blurry subjects, and no shutter lag waiting for the camera’s lens to focus. Lytro, a Silicon Valley start‑up, has just launched the world’s first consumer light-field camera, which shoots pictures that can be focused long after they’re captured, either on the camera itself or online. |
