He built his collection traveling through Europe on purchasing trips for Sakowitz, opting to buy books instead of expensive dinners in Paris and London. Taylor began the Book Collector with 3,800 of his own volumes, quickly adding 1,200 books from a private collection he purchased in West Texas. ![]() ![]() "In 1990, when I decided to put up my (book) collection for sale, I said to my wife, `You have to know what this means to me,' " Taylor said. Once a shoe department manager for the now-defunct Sakowitz department store, Taylor opened the Book Collector and Old Tin Soldier Shoppe 12 years ago. "We are known for having the largest collection west of the Mississippi of rare first editions," Taylor said.
